Life on a farm spanning the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s offered many challenges for a girl child. In the case of young Eve, coming of age in the lush San Luis Valley of the Southwest, there was an added challenge her household consisted of her parents and five sisters, at a time when children were expected to be farmhands, rather than young humans learning to navigate life. Daughters were no exception, and Eve’s dad was harsh and demanding. Yet, along with his demands for labor, came his love for life and his desire to share his wisdom. As Eve grows into a woman, she vacillates between loving and hating her father. But when she faces his impending death, she realizes it’s time to make peace with the past.

Journey to Forgiveness Through the Life and Death of a Farmer eBook Eve Bauer

This is truly a wonderful book. It tells the story of a girl, one of 6 sisters, growing up and working on a farm in southern Colorado. It immediately captures you and makes you feel as if you are in the center of this story. The struggles between family and sisters and their father are portrayed so well. The author’s writing is so honest and authentic, I found myself to be greatly moved by her story. The title is fitting: Journey to Forgiveness. In the end, she reflects on the hard lessons she has learned, the humanity of her parents, and her own personal journey to forgiveness, both for herself and her family. I would definitely recommend this book.

Journey to Forgiveness Through the Life and Death of a Farmer eBook Eve Bauer Reviews

I loved reading this book! Eve's description of the fresh cool breezes and blue skies had me thinking of home. She is very wise with a thoughtful big picture view of hard times, and she knows all the pieces will fall into place eventually. I hope she continues to write, I will certainly continue to read. This book would make a great mini series.
I also grew up on a farm in the San Luis Valley. I am the oldest of 3 girls and know what it was like to grow up as you did. Your descriptions of farming and equipment used to harvest the crops is completely correct. You did a great job.
I enjoyed reading about the author's life with her family in a rural farm setting during the 1950s onward. She reveals the dangers to body and family from leading such a challenging life in a beautiful and remote landscape.
I loved this book! It chronicles the dynamics of a family working on a farm from the point of one of the sisters in that family. The hard won lessons Eve learns from this life and especially from her father are inspiring. It re-creates a period of time in American agriculture that is waning, the family farm. The reality of family dynamics, unforgiving ups and downs of farm life, and the sometimes brutal work it entails are lovingly evoked. I highly recommend this book!
Memoir reading can be a harsh, depressing experience. But NOT this one. This book takes the reader away to the green mountains and fields of the San Luis Valley of Colorado. You get an honest detailed account of what it was truly like growing up a Ranch girl. It was rough, dirty, frightening work, done by 6 girls and their parents. The author's writing is so authentic, its as if you are sitting across from her having coffee. You will learn a lot about pig farming, lettuce farming, and the difficulties and depths a family goes through; and always there is love. Get this book!
This book is full of human interest, honesty, scenic delights, and shows the fruits of a forgiving heart. I bought several copies to share with friends and family.
I enjoyed reading this book because of its honesty and easy, flowing writing style. Initially, I bought the book because I love to support fellow writers -- and, on a more personal level, because I had shared the school bus every day with several of the six sisters who are depicted in this memoir. Although I was shy and did not know them well at all, I knew their story would take me back to my own childhood as a Bowen farm girl in the 60s and 70s. I ended up loving this book because of the author's excellent descriptive abilities reminding me in vivid detail of the stark beauty of the San Luis Valley, Colorado. At the same time, her descriptions of the important people in her life imbued each of them with a stark beauty of their own, their flaws and virtues revealed with honesty and kindness. I was eager to turn the pages of this book to find out how life turned out for all of them. My only criticism would be that I wanted maybe just a little bit more depth to some of the issues; but, of course, when writing a memoir there is only so much an author can feel comfortable sharing. All in all, I think many people will enjoy this portrait of rural Colorado life, no matter where they are from.
